Allergies And Your Child

SneezingAny time your child is sick, it can be a stressful time for both you. It can be even more stressful when the cause of your child’s ailment cannot be determined right away. Very often, when your child keeps falling ill for no reason at all, it could mean that he or she has developed allergies. To find the cause, your child will have to undergo allergy testing and be monitored for any allergy symptoms that may arise. However, you should know that you can forestall all of this from happening, if you act to prevent the causes of allergy symptoms early on.

Factors that Trigger off Allergies & What you can do to Prevent Them

There are several factors that can cause a child to develop allergies. The first factor is genetics. If one or both of the parents have had an allergy in the past, even if they outgrew it, your child may develop one, or more. Prevention can start as early as pregnancy, while the child is still in the womb. If there is a history of food allergies, the mother can help her child developing the same by not eating those foods during pregnancy.

Later on, when it is time to introduce solid foods, if you believe that there is a chance that your child has inherited the same food allergies you had in childhood, you can test this by only introducing one type of food at a time. If your child shows signs of being allergic, then you will know exactly what was in the food that triggered the reaction. You will be able to explain this to your pediatrician with confidence, and you will have saved your child from having to endure the entire battery to pinpoint the culprit.

Another factor can be the environment. Always use HEPA filters in homes with children, and those should take care of most dust, pollen, and mold allergens that can be found within the home. Hypoallergenic bedding, clothing, and carpeting will also go a long way to avoid any allergy symptoms from developing. Pet dander can be controlled by frequent brushings and washings, and if you have multiple pets in the home, it can be so much better for your child, because it desensitizes them to the dander.

Keep in mind that every time your child sneezes and wheezes it does not mean that they have an allergy. Allergy symptoms will also include symptoms such as rashes, nausea, vomiting and difficulty breathing. If you are not sure that it is the flu or a cold, please take your child to their pediatrician immediately. Be ready to recount everything that may have led up to the reaction, and the doctor will run tests to confirm the triggers.
